Mr. Gurcharan Singh, with his Masters in English and Education, has to his credit a decade-long association as faculty member and administrator with the defense oriented prestigious Sainik Schools of Assam and Punjab. He then felt called upon by the God Almighty to steer the fate of the first-ever nascent English medium school of the erstwhile larger district of Faridkot. This bold but career-risky step of his revolutionized the total qualityeducation scenario of the entire Malwa belt of Punjab, considered educationally most backward then. In December, 1992 he justifiably got the rare honor of having been among 15 'National Educationists' shortlisted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, for the candidature of Chairmanship of CBSE, Delhi. He was also shortlisted by Govt. of India for the prestigious 'Padma Awards'
The non-descript institution he had undertaken to lead proved to be a potential seed for the enflowerment of dozens of elitist schools in the region, which together became potent means of providing high quality education to thousands of aspiring students for these 45 years starting from 1974, the year of his landing in the region. Endless stream of bureaucrats, doctors, engineers, educationists and business entrepreneurs that have stepped out of the hallowed portals of these institutions have brought glory to the State of Punjab as a whole.
Though his educational efforts could enable countless students from urban and developed rural areas achieve glory in their lives and careers, here and abroad, his desire to unfold such opportunity to not-so-well off rural students of distant villages who cannot afford heavy transport charges and exorbitant tuition fee of town schools, remained unfulfilled.
The establishment of Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School at Golewala village, 15 Kms away from the nearest CBSE school of Faridkot, can be the realization of his dream of serving aspiring wards of marginal farmers at their door steps with added advantage of affordable fee so that they too can enjoy the glow of success like their town-dwelling counterparts.
